Mandarin Enrichment Classes

Welcome to Frontiers Academy's Mandarin Enrichment after school program! Our program is an immersive journey, carefully curated to ignite a fervor for the Mandarin language while enhancing key linguistic competencies in our students.

Mandarin Novice-Intermediate Class

Primary Goal
The Frontiers Academy Mandarin After School Program will be designed for K - 5 students who are new to the Chinese language. The program will focus on developing students' Mandarin listening and speaking skills through engaging and interactive activities. The program will also introduce students to basic reading and writing in Mandarin.
Program Overview
  • Engaging Curriculum: Starting with the basics, our students will delve deep into the language through interactive games, music, and movement. Guided by our devoted day school faculty, they'll not only enjoy the process but will also solidify their Mandarin foundation.
  • Advanced Learning: As students progress, they'll be introduced to Chinese characters, delve into reading, and cultivate the skills to draft concise paragraphs. With varied prompts and strategies at their disposal, it's a comprehensive Mandarin journey they're embarking on.
  • Thematic Units: The curriculum encompasses themes such as family, weather, animals, numbers, food, and activities. Each unit promises a focus on enhancing language proficiency, intertwined with enriching cultural awareness.
  • Integrated Learning: Beyond just language, our program ensures students relate Mandarin to other subject areas. Be it math, science, or social studies, our hands-on, activity-based approach bridges the gap between language learning and practical application.

Mandarin Intermediate – Advanced Level Class

Primary Goal
This teaching outline is crafted for Frontiers Academy's intermediate to advanced Mandarin classes, intended for students from grades 6 to 12 who already possess a foundational understanding of Mandarin. The curriculum for this year is focused on three main objectives:
  • Weave additional Chinese academic language and cultural elements into the students' educational experience.
  • Contextualize Mandarin learning within real-life scenarios to facilitate discussions and reflections on diverse cultural practices and perspectives.
  • Enhance the students' four key language skills to advance their proficiency and prepare them for standardized language examinations. This preparation aims to support graduating students in achieving the Global Seal of Biliteracy or succeeding in the AP Chinese exam.

Program Overview
  • Drawing from the College Board AP Chinese Language and Culture Course and the STAMP Benchmarks, the Mandarin class framework comprises four units throughout the school year.
  • In each unit, students will explore a specific topic to deepen both their social and academic language abilities, along with their cultural understanding. In addition to cultural content, each unit will also focus on developing the four language skills as outlined by the STAMP text and the requirements of the AP Chinese guidelines.
